Everyday in every moment, the story of your life is playing out. What genre is your story; comedy, action, drama, soap opera? What type of character are you playing in your story? Are there characters in your story that are needing to be written in and out? What is the sound track of your story? I believe that the most exciting part of your story may be waiting to be written. The script is always open to being revised and embellished. You are always able to change the genre and choose a different character to be you!
The invitation is to take some time to be with your script. Perhaps you could block off a period of time and reflect on your script. You could walk or sit in nature or you could find a quiet space to just be. Are you ready to create your plot twist?
“Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it. Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy—the experiences that make us the most vulnerable. Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.” ~ Brené Brown
1) Press Pause ~ I suggest taking some time out and looking at your life. It's much gentler when you choose to take this time. Otherwise, the universe may step in and do it for you. In my life I called it "Stop Therapy" which came in the form of a stress leave from work. My stop therapy included doing a lot of journaling and looking at some stories in my past. It also included walking and reflecting in nature. Most importantly it included asking for help and support. I was able to rise up above my story and take some time to ask myself some tough questions. Was I satisfied with the direction my life was headed? Was my current story in alignment with my values? How did I get here? What do I need to do in order switch the direction of my story? Ultimately what I discovered was that I was being called forward towards new adventures and learning. All was revealed once I took some time for me.
2) Grab the Pen ~ Who is writing your story? One of the things I came to realize in my life was that I was moving through life as if on one of those moving sidewalks. I was playing it safe and going with the flow. I was unaware of and disconnected from my purpose. Grabbing the pen is about saying a solid "YES" to creating a new trajectory and writing your story. The moment I became clear on my purpose I also became clear on where I was headed, how I would get there and many other details.
3) Jump ~ We've all seen moments in an action film where somebody takes a leap of faith and nails the landing. There is a quote I love and it is "Leap and the net will appear" ~ Unknown I have had a few moments of jumping in my life. The most memorable was when I quit my career. I had two paying coaching clients and I was ready to change the world. Now I wouldn't recommend this for everyone. However, for me this decision created the most powerful experience of growth and learning that I could have asked for. My life immediately changed course and it was exhilarating. Where in your life may you be ready to jump?
4) Unplug ~ We live in a time where information is flowing from all directions. One of the ways to get back to you is to unplug. As an example, I have not had cable TV for over 7 years. Whether for a day a weekend or for good, unplugging can be a helpful way to re-connect to you and your nature. The awareness and messages that can come through when you create this space in your life may create an unexpected "Plot Twist"
At the time of writing this blog post I became very aware that there was a place in my life where I was playing small and had an opportunity to jump. While the decision to jump certainly felt a little risky it also felt exhilarating and made me feel alive. Now that I have jumped I can see the space that will be created by this decision and am excited to utilize this space for creativity and cultivating more joy in my life.
