Last week, I went to a talk about "Issues in Adolescence" and as information was being shared, I had this growing awareness / idea. We are emotional beings, yet I don't recall anyone giving me permission to be emotional until I started training as a life coach at the age of 36. Although as I grew up, I do remember being told things like; "don't cry in public" or "don't be angry" or "don't be so loud" or "don't cry" or "be strong" etc etc. As a species, we have evolved very quickly and we still have primal instincts such as fight or flight, which is a response to fear. A dog's response to fear is to growl, which is a natural / necessary response to danger. It is instinctual, for a dog to growl or bark. I think we as human beings, have become disconnected, from our natural emotions and instead of feeling them we are suppressing them, because we don't know what else to do. It's probably like trying to drive a Ferrari for the first time, without lessons, you'll be all over, or off the road, when you put your foot down. So when we find ourselves in situations that bring up emotion, we get overwhelmed, it doesn't feel good or right. It also conflicts with what we may have been told when we were growing up. How many times, have you seen someone hold back their tears? Or apologize for crying? Suppressing our feelings, is similar to holding a beach ball under water, eventually, like the ball, they will come up. We are living in a world that is able to create instant results and we try to fix things when they are broken. We are not "broken", we are human, feelings are what makes life exciting. Learning to "be with" your emotions takes time, practice, patience and permission. When we release our emotions, we are releasing trapped energy and are making space for positive emotions. Start, by giving yourself permission. Related posts: "Five Ways to Be with Your Feelings" "3 Steps to Embracing Anger"
